A Panchatantra Story(with a Difference)

Information Technology is quite a stressful field to be in. In spite of that, the creativity of engineers has been irrepressible. One of the most unusual outlets that it has acquired is through the refinement of old Panchatantra moral stories that our elders used to narrate to us, the Indian equivalent of Aesop's fables. The most famous among them is the variant of the wood cutter's story doing the rounds. It even has an exciting and very true moral at the end.
The original Panchatantra story :
One day, while a woodcutter was cutting a branch of a tree above a river, his axe fell into the river. When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "Why are you crying?" The woodcutter replied that his axe has fallen into water. The Lord went down into the water and reappeared with a golden axe. "Is this your axe?" the Lord asked.
The woodcutter replied, "No."
The Lord again went down and came up with a silver axe. "Is this your axe?" the Lord asked.
Again, the woodcutter replied, "No."The Lord went down again and came up with an iron axe. "Is this your axe?" the Lord asked. The woodcutter replied, "Yes."
The Lord was pleased with the man's honesty and gave him all three axes to keep, and the woodcutter went home happily.

The modern Panchatantra story
:
Once upon a time, there was a software engineer who used to develop Programs on his Pentium machine (of course a lap top),sitting under a tree on the banks of a river. He used to earn his bread by selling those programs in the Friday market.
One day, while he was working, his machine tumbled off from his lap and fell in the river. Encouraged by the Panchatantra story of his childhood (the woodcutter and the axe), he started praying to the River Goddess. The River Goddess wanted to test him and so appeared only after one month of rigorous prayers. Poor Engineer, he waited for a long time and at last Goddess came!
The engineer told her that he had lost his computer in the river. As usual, the Goddess wanted to test his honesty. She showed him a match box and asked, "Is this your computer?" Disappointed by the Goddess' lack of computer awareness, the engineer replied, "No." She next showed him a pocket-sized calculator and asked if that was his.Annoyed, the engineer said "No, not at all!!"Finally, she came up with his own Pentium machine and asked if it was his. The engineer, left with no option, sighed and said "Yes." The River Goddess was happy with his honesty.

She was about to give him all three items, but before she could make the offer, the engineer asked her, "Don't you know that you're supposed to show me some better computers before bringing up my own?"The River Goddess, angered at this, replied, "I know that, you stupid donkey! The first two things I showed you were the the latest computers from IBM!"

So saying, she disappeared with his Computer!

Moral for Information Technology Professionals(and also for would be professionals):
If you're not up-to-date with technology trends, its better keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Tare Zameen Par

Today i went for Tare Zameen Par. I wanted to see this movie beign a Aamir fan. But could not go. Finally today the chance came through. But when we went to the theater we found that the film had shifted to another theater. Shit!!! But somehow we were able to get there in time and get the tickets as there was not much rush.

The story is about a child, Ishaan, who suffers dyslexia . But he suffers a lot because no one around him recognizes that he is a slow learner. He is a good painter but his parents are always thinking about his marks. One day he bunks school and gets his brother to sign the leave note. but parents somehow come to know and he is taken to task by his father. They move him to a boarding school so that he learns discipline. A very emotional scene ensues.

In boarding school also its no different for ishant. He is labelled idiot, crazy, duffer and all sort of things. all students , except his friend rajan, make fun of him. Then comes a new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, played by Aamir khan. He understands the symptoms shown by Ishant and also goes to his home to know more. As he too was a Dyslexic he helps Ishant overcome his troubles like making him understand letters, shapes etc. Finally Ishant is able to overcome his problems . he wins a painting competition organized by Ram and also does well in academics. His parents are surprised when they came to collect his repost card.
The film is excellent according to me. How can u not love a film which is made with so much compassion. An issue based movieis hardly made in India and Aamir Khan has broken all the norms by deciding tomake his directorial debut with such a drastically different film and kudos to him and his creative team of writers. The Scenes are excellently taken for example the starting scene in which Ishant is picking fishes from the gutter, the sequence in which he bunks class, the scene in which his parents leave him in boarding school and many more to say about.

Overall 'll give it 9.5 out of 10. The songs are narrative( well placed and have a meaning in the movie) and the the lyrics have meanings. Music is good. A must watch and for me one of the movies of 2007 along with Chake De India!!!

On a High

Its been a month since i have put something in my blog. After been very frequent in posting in November i somehow could not find time to write anything in December until now cos as usual i have been busy :(
December had a high point in my college life. I was unanimously selected to be the next IEEE chairperson. The thing is that it was not unexpected but i thought atleast 'll have some competition so that it will be a challenge for me so that i can they can complain about where i went wrong. Its always good to have an opposition.
But the job started only after the appointment cos i had to hold a membership drive which i did and got new members registered them and sent the details to HQ. now 'm free and with lots of time in hand going to relax for the rest of the hols....
In between i had gone for an All kerala IEEE Student Meet in Universiy College,Thoduphuza. I along with 3 of my friends went there for a day. it was interesting and also met ppl from other colleges, shared ideas and stuff.
Thats all for now. More to come later!!! till then ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!

The story of an Indian Engineer!!!!

Read the story of an Indian engineer. The story may differ at different colleges and also in different situations. 'm just laying down the general outline of the 4 years in the life of a student studying for engineering. It all starts with the student joining the Science stream in school and after a series of entrance exams finally enters an engineering college( sometimes the case is different here too).

The making of the Great Indian Engineer is a very complicated task which involves a collaboration of many disciplined and restrained efforts. It involves patience, suspension of reason, money and a will made of an alloy of the highest strength . Although an Indian engineering grad will look normal to the outside world, there will be 10 centuries worth of wisdom and knowledge between his years. We are trained never to let the world know of our amazing abilities lest we be labeled as the definitive Indian geeks.

An Indian Engineer’s training to take on the world starts as soon as he enters the college premises for the first time. He is made to feel a false sense of security by the seniors until the parents accompanying them have left the college compound. Then he is given a lecture by his seniors on words he never knew existed, and rules are laid down, which each and every new student will inadvertently follow letter to letter. This is the first and (usually) the only legitimate class that actually takes place for the next four years!

After that, everything else learned is through self discovery. In case of hostlers life governing Philosophies are learned step by step from “Thy toothpaste is thy entire hostel’s toothpaste” slowly making its way up to “Thy undergarment is thy neighbour’s undergarment”. Privacy, to an engineering student, is only something that can be had in the toilet, and that too separated by a thin, hole-ridden wooden (make-shift) door with negligible sound (and smell) proofing.

Classes occur rarely and when they do, except for a few uninitiated ‘day-scholars’ and an unfortunate professor, the class will be empty. The teachers serve little purpose other than to act as scarecrows to keep the children away from the staff rooms. Innocent love-birds are seen chirping at every nook and cranny of the college campus. Studies are almost non-existent for the entire length of each semester. But the syllabus is as huge as ever.

The only time he studies - and this is what sets an Indian Engineer widely apart from other kinds of engineers - is on the day before the final University Semester examinations. In fact, some engineers are gifted with an abundance of skill such that even this last minute studying is rendered redundant and needless. The way their brain absorbs information will put even a sponge to shame! The is one of the profound strengths of an engineer.

Nights in a hostel are all about partying. Walk through the corridor of an Engineering students hostel at night and you will inadvertently hear sounds of gunfire (Counter Strike), or cars racing( NFS), listen to loud and deriding wise-cracks, ‘clinging’ of paper-glasses accompanied with all involved students yelling “cheers!” and see different colored smoke as if the hostel was on fire or something. But you will also see one or two students sitting alone with their books not minding any of the distractions on offer as if they were some social outcasts.

But no matter what happens, when the 4 years of engineering are up, the ordinary Indian boy that went into the college will emerge as The Great Indian Engineer with companies(requirements met) ranging from Wipro or TCS to Yahoo! and AMD fighting over him(this usually starts in the second half of 3rd year itself). Eventually its up to the gr8 engineer to decide which he wants to join. This is the story of The Great Indian Engineer.

Om Shanti Om (OSO)

I have not been to any movie for the last 3 months which is unusual of me cos i go for a movie atleast once a month. but this time i was busy for 3 months with end of sem rush, projects and exams. Finally on saturday i went for the SRK starer Om Shanti Om.
Om Shanti Om brings to mind the song in which Rishi Kapoor is dancing on a spinning disk in the movie Karz. Well OSO is almost a remake of that movie with some more details. the release saw the clash of the titans with Sanjay Leela Bansali's Saawariay and OSO clashing at the box office . But the SRK starer prevailed and broke most of the records in the first week itself.

I went for the film as there was no other good film playing at that time( and i had no other choice too :-) ). The film starts with the song i mentioned above. Its the story of Om Prakash Makhija(funny name) who is a junior artist who falls in love with a big actress Shantipriya. But she loves someone else who kills her . the only witness is Om who dies on the same day after hurting himself in the process of rescuing Shanti. 30 years later Om is Om Kapoor who is a leading actor in the film industry and he somehow finds out what happened to him in the earlier birth and in the process tries to bring the murderer of Shanti to justice.

The movie is good to watch with very funny comic scenes. A scene which some to mind instantly is SRK playing the role of a south india actor. " ENNA RASCALA. MIND ITTT" :-). The ending is unpredictable but the story overall does not have a feel to it. The songs are good(but Shahrukh trying to be Hrithik was absoloute rubbish).
Overall i'll give it 6/10. Deepika in her first film is excellent. Arjun Rampal and Shreyas too gave good performances. Well you can guess that 'm not a ShahRukh fan ;-)

Watch the clip below. ENNA RASCALA! MIND ITT!!!

An Eventful Semester Ends!!!!

With the S5 exams done now 'll be progressing into a new semester. The 5th semester was very eventful with something or the other always happening around. The semester had a host of core IT subjects which included DBMS, System programming to name a few and also for the first time we had to do and present a project(DBMS based) which was an exciting prospect as its useful to gain practical knowledge and no better way that to do it practically.

The semester started with the class planning to go for a Industrial visit. We went on a 4 day tour and visited madras, ponidcherry and kodai(read my earlier posts titled industrial visit). It was very much fun and we got to know our classmates better.

This semester i was more involved in IEEE work which i had joined when i was in S3. Since IEEE in my college was just an year old we were just starting to do more events. So there was at least one , sometimes 2, IEEE event per month. On one sych occasion we went to a school to take class for the 10 grade students and also tell them about the scope and opportunities in Engg. Also there were various workshops and talks. The final work of IEEE for the year was the WIE(Woman In Engg) affinity group which was a 2 day event and we had participation of students from various colleges across Kerala.

But all this activities came at a cost. My academics started lagging behind and then i had to put in some serious effort in the fag end of the semester to make it up.But exams were pretty good.

The 5th semester was the best i had in the college extra curricular activity wise but the worst academic wise. Hoping atleast next sem i can find a balance between both. The subjects in S6 seem pretty interesting but you never know unless you have experienced it first hand. And also the next semester is a crucial year cos that is the time when companies come around for placements.

Anyways 'm currently into my holidays with no idea what to do with the time in hand cos for the first time in 6 months i'm finding myself without any work. :-).

The wait fianlly ends!!!!

Finally the wait ended after a long wait... ya for alomst a month i have been thinking of when the wait, read exams, will end and finally on 23th the last exam was done and dusted and i finally broke free from the shackles .
well but thinking about how i wrote the exams gives me the creeps.. Well the first 2 were, that is, Systems programming and Software engineering were good. the next one was Operations Research( a maths like subject) was decent. the third one( my least favorite) was ok according to my standards and the last, DBMS, i went blank on seeing the paper but still managed to do well. but overall if i think about it what comes to mind is a rotten tomato :-)
But then its all over. no matter what i do i cant change it. now that i'm finally into my holidays 'm planning to have lots of fun which i missed during the last 2 months cos of project submissions, labs and exams. But most of my time will be taken by computer, orkut, games, tv, books. Hoping to do something creative but as soon as i get near my tv or my computer i jump into it as if something inside it mesmerizes me to it.
The 5th semester is done and now i move into a new semester(hopefully) with new subjects ,which i hope will be interesting, and new challenges awaiting for me in the tunnel ahead.

What People have forgotten!!!!

In this fast paced world people have forgotten many thing. All the time they spend in their work , making their careers or sorting their troubles that they don't even have time to socialize with people they know. Friends, even parents are forgotten in the race of people who don't want to be left behind.Read the lines below and understand what we have lost and forgotten( for those who cant read Hindi 'm terribly sorry. i'll try and post a translation soon)

ज़िन्दगी की इस दौड़ में दौड़ के करना क्या है? ( what is there in life to run so much)
जब यही जीना है दोस्तों तो फ़िर मरना क्या है? (if this is life , then what is death)
पहली बारिश में ट्रेन लेट होने की फ़िक्र है ( the fear of missing the train in the first rain)
भूल गये भीगते हुए टहलना क्या है? ( Did you forget what it is to stroll in the rain?)
सीरियल्स् के किर्दारों का सारा हाल है मालूम (Know all feelings of the actors in soaps)
पर माँ का हाल पूछ्ने की फ़ुर्सत कहाँ है? ( but still we don't have time to ask our mother)
अब रेत पे नंगे पाँव टहलते क्यूं नहीं? ( now why dont you walk in the sands with naked feet?)
108 हैं चैनल् फ़िर दिल बहलते क्यूं नहीं? ( 108 channels on tv still feeling bored)
इन्टरनैट से दुनिया के तो टच में हैं, ( in touch with the whole world via internet)
लेकिन पडोस में कौन रहता है जानते तक नहीं. ( still dont know who stays in the neighbor hood)
मोबाइल, लैन्डलाइन सब की भरमार है, ( there are mobiles, land phones in numbers)
लेकिन जिग्ररी दोस्त तक पहुँचे ऐसे तार कहाँ हैं? ( still where is the thread that connects friends)
कब डूबते हुए सुरज को देखा , याद है? (do you remember when you last saw the setting sun? )
कब जाना था शाम का गुज़रना क्या है? ( when did you last realize the passing away of evenings?)
तो दोस्तों ज़िन्दगी की इस दौड़ में दौड़् के करना क्या है (so friends what is there to run for)
जब् यही जीना है तो फ़िर मरना क्या है.. ( if this is life then what is death?)

Does this sound familiar..well must be..cos these are the lines for the movie "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" which is an favorite among most of the people

Computer crashed!!!

For those who were wondering where i was for the last 15 days and and why i wasn't coming online here is the reason- my computer's smps( switch mode power supply) got knocked out and i let it stay so for some days as i was busy with other things. After facing lot of inconveniences in those days then only did i come to realize how much dependent i'm on my computer to get my work done. Finally after 15 days, without computer and also without internet, i finally decided to repair my computer and now 'm back.

During this time i had a lot of topics which i decided i'll post in the blog once my computer gets repaired but most of them have lost their sting by now. In the middle of the days ie on 29th of September my 1 years association with Orkut can and went quietly( i dont know why but i always remember such small details like when i joined orkut etc). Thats it for now. I wont be posting much for sometime now as i have my exams due.

For all the wannabe IT company professionals

As i am an IT student and as most of the youngsters want to get placed in IT companies i just want them to read this post so that they can know some of the ways and the tricks in IT companies. Its better to be prepared beforehand .So here goes....

If you are preparing for a career in IT or are new to IT, many of the “dirty little secrets” listed below may surprise you because we don’t usually talk about them out loud. If you are an IT veteran, you’ve probably encountered most of these issues and have a few of your own to add — and please, by all means, take a moment to add them to the comments. You are welcome. Most of these secrets are aimed at network administrators, IT managers, and desktop support professionals. This list is not aimed at developers and programmers — they have their own set of additional dirty little secrets — but some of these will apply to them as well.

10.) The pay in IT is good compared to many other professions, but since they pay you well, they often think they own you

Although the pay for IT professionals is not as great as it was before the dot-com flameout and the IT backlash in 2001-2002, IT workers still make very good money compared to many other professions (at least the ones that require only an associate’s or bachelor’s degree). And there is every reason to believe that IT pros will continue to be in demand in the coming decades, as technology continues to play a growing role in business and society. However, because IT professionals can be so expensive, some companies treat IT pros like they own them. If you have to answer a tech call at 9:00 PM because someone is working late, you hear, “That’s just part of the job.” If you need to work six hours on a Saturday to deploy a software update to avoid downtime during business hours, you get, “There’s no comp time for that since you’re on salary. That’s why we pay you the big bucks!”

9.) It will be your fault when users make silly errors

Some users will angrily snap at you when they are frustrated. They will yell, “What’s wrong with this thing?” or “This computer is NOT working!” or (my personal favorite), “What did you do to the computers?” In fact, the problem is that they accidentally deleted the Internet Explorer icon from the desktop, or unplugged the mouse from the back of the computer with their foot, or spilled their coffee on the keyboard.

8.) You will go from goat to hero and back again multiple times within any given day

When you miraculously fix something that had been keeping multiple employees from being able to work for the past 10 minutes — and they don’t realize how simple the fix really was — you will become the hero of the moment and everyone’s favorite employee. But they will conveniently forget about your hero anointment a few hours later when they have trouble printing because of a network slowdown — you will be enemy No. 1 at that moment. But if you show users a handy little Microsoft Outlook trick before the end of the day, you’ll soon return to hero status.

7.) Certifications won’t always help you become a better technologist, but they can help you land a better job or a pay raise

Headhunters and human resources departments love IT certifications. They make it easy to match up job candidates with job openings. They also make it easy for HR to screen candidates. You’ll hear a lot of veteran IT pros whine about techies who were hired based on certifications but who don’t have the experience to effectively do the job. They are often right. That has happened in plenty of places. But the fact is that certifications open up your career options. They show that you are organized and ambitious and have a desire to educate yourself and expand your skills. If you are an experienced IT pro and have certifications to match your experience, you will find yourself to be extremely marketable. Tech certifications are simply a way to prove your baseline knowledge and to market yourself as a professional. However, most of them are not a good indicator of how good you will be at the job.

6.) Your nontechnical co-workers will use you as personal tech support for their home PCs

Your co-workers (in addition to your friends, family, and neighbors) will view you as their personal tech support department for their home PCs and home networks. They will e-mail you, call you, and/or stop by your office to talk about how to deal with the virus that took over their home PC or the wireless router that stopped working after the last power outage and to ask you how to put their photos and videos on the Web so their grandparents in Iowa can view them. Some of them might even ask you if they can bring their home PC to the office for you to fix it. The polite ones will offer to pay you, but some of them will just hope or expect you can help them for free. Helping these folks can be very rewarding, but you have to be careful about where to draw the line and know when to decline.

5.) Vendors and consultants will take all the credit when things work well and will blame you when things go wrong

Working with IT consultants is an important part of the job and can be one of the more challenging things to manage. Consultants bring niche expertise to help you deploy specialized systems, and when everything works right, it’s a great partnership. But you have to be careful. When things go wrong, some consultants will try to push the blame off on you by arguing that their solution works great everywhere else so it must be a problem with the local IT infrastructure. Conversely, when a project is wildly successful, there are consultants who will try to take all of the credit and ignore the substantial work you did to customize and implement the solution for your company.

4.) You’ll spend far more time babysitting old technologies than implementing new ones

One of the most attractive things about working in IT is the idea that we’ll get to play with the latest cutting edge technologies. However, that’s not usually the case in most IT jobs. The truth is that IT professionals typically spend far more time maintaining, babysitting, and nursing established technologies than implementing new ones. Even IT consultants, who work with more of the latest and greatest technologies, still tend to work primarily with established, proven solutions rather than the real cutting edge stuff.

3.) Veteran IT professionals are often the biggest roadblock to implementing new technologies

A lot of companies could implement more cutting edge stuff than they do. There are plenty of times when upgrading or replacing software or infrastructure can potentially save money and/or increase productivity and profitability. However, it’s often the case that one of the largest roadblocks to migrating to new technologies is not budget constraints or management objections; it’s the veteran techies in the IT department. Once they have something up and running, they are reluctant to change it. This can be a good thing because their jobs depend on keeping the infrastructure stable, but they also use that as an excuse to not spend the time to learn new things or stretch themselves in new directions. They get lazy, complacent, and self-satisfied.

2.) Some IT professionals deploy technologies that do more to consolidate their own power than to help the business

Another subtle but blameworthy thing that some IT professionals do is select and implement technologies based on how well those technologies make the business dependent on the IT pros to run them, rather than which ones are truly best for the business itself. For example, IT pros might select a solution that requires specialized skills to maintain instead of a more turnkey solution. Or an IT manager might have more of a Linux/UNIX background and so chooses a Linux-based solution over a Windows solution, even though the Windows solution is a better business decision (or, vice versa, a Windows admin might bypass a Linux-based appliance, for example). There are often excuses and justifications given for this type of behavior, but most of them are disingenuous.

1.) IT pros frequently use jargon to confuse nontechnical business managers and hide the fact that they screwed up

All IT pros — even the very best — screw things up once in a while. This is a profession where a lot is at stake and the systems that are being managed are complex and often difficult to integrate. However, not all IT pros are good at admitting when they make a mistake. Many of them take advantage of the fact that business managers (and even some high-level technical managers) don’t have a good understanding of technology, and so the techies will use jargon to confuse them (and cover up the truth) when explaining why a problem or an outage occurred. For example, to tell a business manager why a financial application went down for three hours, the techie might say, “We had a blue screen of death on the SQL Server that runs that app. Damn Microsoft!” What the techie would fail to mention was that the BSOD was caused by a driver update he applied to the server without first testing it on a staging machine.

Post your comments about what you feel after reading this post. Thanks for Techrepublic for posting this.

6 Sixes in a Over....Impossible is nothing!!!!!!!!!!

With the T20 Cricket World Cup going on the excitement never dies in India which is a country addicted to the game of Cricket. And Yuvraj Singh gave the people something more to celebrate when he hit Stuart Board,a main line England Bowler, for 6 sixes in a over. Not only did the fantastic hitting make it possible to win the match against England but also kept their hopes of reaching the T20 world cup semifinal alive( which they did by beating South Africa in the next game). The sixes were no fluke as all were good cricketing shots. With the internet so well advanced nowadays which make the people relive these golden moments. watch the video below to see all the six sixes( hope youtube does not remove this video). watching this i realized ,as i say, "Impossible is Nothing!!!" :-)

WIE Inaugration

College reopened after Onam Holidays and as i was able to collect the money i had given from my pocket. Just read my Onam Celebration Post. Even if i was not able to collect the full amount i was able to minimize the loss.

As i'm an active member of the IEEE branch in my college i'm currently busy with a 2 day event which i going to be held in our college on 10th and 11th Sept. The event includes the inauguration of the "Women in Engineering" Affinity group, a Workshop by TCS and a Best manager Contest by T.I.M.E ,which is a reputed coaching class center. during the course of this semester IEEE has organized some very good events and workshop. But this will be the biggest of them all. And there are only or so members in the IEEE in my college. So pretty busy these days.

Will try to post about this event in my next post.

Chetan Bhagat books

Once i was browsing through some book in a book store i came upon one book written by a certain Chetan Bhagat. I didn't know who the author was but i certainly knew about the book as i had read its review somewhere as it had become a bestseller. The book was " one night at the call center". that day i didn't buy the book but i wanted to get that book. then i came to know that he had written another book.
Recently i brought both the books and reading through the books i felt that it was an all to similar story all of us had to tell. i started off by reading "Five Point Someone" which is a story about 3 students from the IIT who have toiled to get into IIT and how they screw their lives in the college. This is the same story most of the college students have to tell and i realized how much truth was there in the book. The book is a must read for all college students and tell us what not to do in colleges. Its upto you to apply it in your lives or not.
The second book was the book was the book i said i saw in the book store."One Night At the Call Center " is a book of 6 people who are working in a call center and how they get a call from god one night. The book is very well written and tells the difficulties faced by people in the outside world and how they should overcome it.
Though both the books are fictional i found them too true to be that. The book are a must read and will be in some of the best books i have read.

Onam Celebrations in college

Onam is a festival which is celebrated with great pomp and activity in Kerala. it is the main festival off all keralites. So most Colleges and schools celebrate it in there own campus. i have missed lot of onams as i have spent the best part of my life outside kerala. but now 'm back here.

We have onam celebration in our college every year. students in our college are divided into 4 houses-agni,akash,prithvi,and vayu. Final year students have a separate house of there own(though it not liked by all). The activities are participated by students of the various houses and they are given prizes. One of the main attraction is the Pookalam(flower carpet) contest. Last year my house had got 2nd in that competition and i wanted to repeat that(oops!!! sorry i forgot to mention that i was made the temporary captain if Agni House :-) ). the day before the celebration was the day our exams were over but my work had just started. i had to collect money from the students so that i can buy flowers for the floral carpet(when onam comes the flowers are more costlier than gold). But by that time most of the students had gone home only leaving a handful back in college. So by the end of the day i had 500 rs( out of which 200 i got from students rest were from my pocket) while the rest of the houses had collected more than a thousand.
That night i sent one of my friends to get the flowers. the Big day arrived and the competition was supposed to start at 9.30 but they started at 9( lack of communication). So we started a hour late. Buy the time we had drawn the carpet using chalk the flowers arrived> luckily we finished the thing just in time. When the results came my house had come second(second cos final years always get first even if they have made the worst thing). Yippeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!! I was feeling very happy cos i had emulated performance of last year( first was what i wanted..but i'm happy..maybe next time). And guess what the houses which had collected over 1000Rs came 4th and 5th.
The chief guest gave me my prize which was a box full of chocolates which i distributed to all who had helped me with the contest. thank you guys. The rest of the day was spent watching cultural events( and lot of booing for flop events :-) ).

Friendship Day

Today,5th of august, is the friendship day. The day brings back nostalgic memories of all the friends that i have had till now and all the good time that i have spent with them.
i have studied in 4 schools(all KV's) in my schooling days. i have made many friends. many of then i have lost touch with. some i still am in contact with, a big thanks to ORKUT.
I have spent my best days of my schooling in Bombay where i made some great friends whom i miss very much every day. Though they were not my only good friends but they are special as i have spent my growing up years with them.I have learnt a lot from them . a big thanks guys.
Then when i came back to Kochi(which i didn't want), i made some new friends who were very good that they made me get over the mumbai hangover. thanks guys.
In our busy lives we seldom have time to keep in touch with old friends. the only medium that i have now is Orkut. And guess what, due to orkut i was able to meet friends whom i had studied with 10 years ago and we were able to have get together.
in the end i wasn't to say a big thanks to all the friends who have been with me through all my high and low points, for bearing with me.Even if we lose touch you all are still in my heart.
i want to dedicate this following song to all my friends. Enjoy.

Industrial Visit S5 - part 3

it looks like i'm posting in too much detail. so 'm going to cram the rest of the 2 days in this post. these were the days when we had the most of the fun.

day 3- Pondi
we reached Pondi by 8 had breakfast and left to visit Wipro, which was the industry we were supposed to visit. We reached there by 10 and were divided into 2 bacthes of 21 each. we finished the industry visit by 12. So we went sightseeing. had lunch at 1.30. We went to the beach and had lots of fun playing in the water. we left the beach by 6 and had to take a room as most of the people who had ventured into the water had to get fresh. we took a room and got fresh. had dinner by 9 and left pondi by 12.

day 4- Kodai
We reached Kodaikannal(for those who dont know, kodai is a hill station in tamilnadu) just in time for a brunch. After that we went to some gardens and also a suicide point(it was not much of a suicide point as it was all gilled up. i have no idea why they call it the suicide point then). Then we went to a lake which was the main attraction. When we reached there i saw a cycle shop renting cycles. i took a cycle and some of my friends also took one. slowly most of the people had a cycle. those who didnt have were going boating. i preffered cycling as it was one thing i like to do. cycling came naturally to me. So i slowly started off on the cycle. and completed one of the lake before joining with my friends who were taking an ice cream break. Had an icecream and off again for another lap. this time i had company and like this before i knew i had taken 6 laps of the lake. i reached back by 6and the cycle was returned. by that time i was famished and took some friends and went to have some food.
we left for a resort where a camp fire was planned. We played some camp fire games. had dinner and stated off on our way back by 11 or 12. this time i slept well for the first time in 4 days.
i reached back home at 8.30. actually we had to attend classes that day.by kindly our hod gave us the day off. So thus my tour came to a close. the tour in which i made lot of new friends and have lot of fond memories to treasure.

Industrial Visit S5 - part 2

don't read this post unless you have done the first part.

Day2 -
WE were running late as we had made so many stops. to reach madras at 10 would be only distant dream. We reached a Dharmapuri - a small town in tamil nadu. there we brushed our teeth and got fresh( didn't take a bath just freshened up). had our breakfast. then i and one of my friend went battery hunting for my digital camera as my batteries were running low and could die off any minute. but we didnt find any shop which sells batteries required for digicam. finally i gave in and we returned back to our bus and i engrossed my self in a newspaper that i had brought. We finally reached Madras at 1 thanks to our driver who had promised us that we would reach there for lunch. We had lunch and we decided to drop the plan of getting a room in madras to get fresh. though there were some protests they finally gave in when they got the logic. we went shopping in T-Nagar. As i had been there already i was acting as a guide to my mates as i had been there before. all went shopping. i was just window shopping as i had no interest to buy anything. the shopping went on till 8. people started returning with big bags and all. i went with our teacher and brought her as her sandals were giving her some trouble. we brought 2 new pairs of them. then we had dinner at 9 and left Madras at 10. We went to Mamallapuram where we took rooms. I was stinking as i hadn't taken a bath for more than 36 hours. i was asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. We were told to get up at early s we had to leave by 5. i woke up at 3.30 and also called my friend who was sleeping besides me. We both took baths and woke up the rest of the people in the room. our room was ready by 4.30 all packed up and all. when we went out to see who all were up we were surprised that only some people were awake and the people who told us that we had to wake up at 5 were not even up. finallywe were able to raise the lazy bones and most of them were ready by 5.30. we left at 6 for pondi.

Day 3 in next post.

Industrial Visit S5 - part 1

Industrial visit is being encouraged by the management of every college nowadays. the main idea behind it is the students should let themselves know things practically.not only these i.v’s give exposure in academic point of view, but also exposes students in knowing different places, interacting with industrial people directly. But the students idea is: To hell with the industry, all we want to do is enjoy the days of the iv away from books classes etc.

Our class decided to go on an iv this sem. well it was early to go to a iv as its mostly held when the end of sem approaches but this time students wanted to go early as they know that they will get busy and will not be able to go for an iv by the end of the sem( as by that time results may come out too). The places we decided to go were Madras,Pondicherry and Hokkanakkal(which we later changed to Kodaikanal). After a eventful one week of getting students to come for iv, collecting money, fixing up the industry etc we left for out iv on 26july evening. In the edn out of 62 people in the class 44 decided to come( one didn't come as he met with an accident on the day before the iv) there was a bit of tension on the last day as Wipro- the company which we had requested hadn't sent their permission letter yet, but soon that was solved and we started by 6 p.m(the original time was 5 but the bus we were going on came late and also some students were late too).

That day day was full of troubles troubles and more troubles. we had two industries lined up to go. in the end we decided to drop one. but nobody was informed. we had to waste an hour by the roadside to solve the issue. then the bus headlight stopped working owing to some loose connection. finally we reached thrissur by 9 and had dinner. then we started off again. the bus had an awesome music system and disco lights. we all danced till we were tired(dancing went on for 2-3 hours). Then we reached Walayar, which is the checkpoint between the kerala-tamilnadu border. There was a huge traffic jam there. usually when i had passed throught that place when i went with family we never had much trouble and crossed in 2 mins or so. but this time we had to stay in the traffic jam for 2 1/2 hours. man it was really irritating. then we crossed it. one by one everybody started falling asleep. i was not getting much sleep dont know why. then i went and sat with the drivers and for the rest of the night followed the roads( which were very good and a sight to behold at night) and chased down other vehicles. soon i was joined by 2 of my other friends. the bus was going full throttel all the time. a amazing sight i saw that night that the road had trees on both sides and their brances were bent and the trees on both sides of the road met in the middle of the road forming a canopy on top of the road.it was a amazing sight and i tried to take pics of it but all i got was my camera flash reflected in the glass of the windshield. then we met with our cs batch who had left a day before us. they had some problem with their bus. and we stopped again to help them out. stopped for tea at 5 at some wayside tea shop. most of the students were sleeping and didnt know that we had stopped. some of those who were awake went for a refreshing tea break. then i slept for a wink at 6. and some idiot took the photo of me sleeping and sampled it to the whole bus(as he had no other job in the world).

this was the first day. read the second part which 'm posting next.

Harry Poter and The Deathly Hallows

The wait is almost over for all the harry potter fanatics. The most awaited book-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-in recent memory will hit the book stores in a few hours time. The fans will line up in large numbers to get the final installment of favorite book in their hands and read thorough it and put an end a period of intense discussions, Rumors etc.All wait for the final confrontation between Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived, the Chosen One, the “symbol of hope” for both the Wizard and Muggle worlds, and Lord Voldemort, He Who Must Not Be Named, the nefarious leader of the Death Eaters and would-be ruler of all. Good versus Evil. Love versus Hate.

The first installment of the book written by J.K.Rowling was published in 1997. From then on Harry Potter mania has gripped this world like no other book in history ever has. With each installment, the “Potter” series has grown increasingly dark, and this volume wil be no exception. Many of the readers, including myself, have grown up reading and waiting for the next installment of the book to hit the bookstores.

I first read the book when i was in 10th. and from the first book onwards i'm hooked on to it. and i have lost the count of the number of times i have reread each book from cover to cover. and like all other HP fans i'm eagerly waiting for the books to hit the stores but i'm not sure if 'll go and buy it outright as this is where the price factor comes in.Maybe 'll borrow it from a friend( well i have booked the book from at least 5 people after making them promise that i'll be first to get the book after they finish reading it once :-) ]

Well finally the book is coming out we'll get to know what happens to Harry. What is going to happen to Voldemort-the villain of the book? who lives and who dies? what will be the life of those who live after that? and many more.

The wait is finally OVER.

But what ever happens in the book the legend of Harry Potter will live on and will be passed on to many generations.Visit this blog site entirely dedicated to Harry Potter

The New 7 Wonders

A event was conducted to crown the new 7 world wonders of the world. out of s list of 20 or so beautiful monuments 7 had to be selected and the results were to be declared in Lisbon,Portugal on 7-7-07. One of the wonders was our beloved Taj Mahal. The voting started months ago and by the start of the final stage of voting Taj was no where in the top seven. This generated messages in news channels "is India sleeping?".People started telling Taj wont make it to the top 10,forget the top7. People then realized that what was happening and then started the massive campaigning to vote for taj. Even many celebrities started to take part and people messaged, emialed, scrapped their friends and relatives to vote.and the votes started piling in

When the dust settled on the gala event in which the results of the poll was announced, guess what Taj was among the top 7, one of the new 7 wonders of the world. the new seven wonders are

The Great Wall, China Petra, Jordan Christ Redeemer, Brazil

Chichén Itzá, Mexico The Roman Colosseum, Italy The Taj Mahal, India

Machu Pichu,Peru

This shows that if Indian people are challenged to anything they don't back down. they will stand up and give their best.

Books and Me!!!!

Well in my earlier post i have posted that 'm a voracious reader of books. well ya its true. i have been reading books ever since i remember.Even when i was in school i used to read my english text book well before the teacher has taken it in class. I used to finish off the text book in the holidays itself.
I first started off by reading comics like Champak, Tinkle etc. These were my first books and i still have them. I have not given it out or something like that. the oldest Champak comic book i have dates back to 1993. So most probably i must have started reading these books then. First and all i used to read only the picture stories and all. Later on i started to read the short stories in them. I always used to like Tinkle those days as they had fully illustrated stories only. Once somebody, i dont exactly remember, brought me a huge bundle of books, the ones of Phantom, Mandrake and all. I gave them for book binding as they were in almost in taters. and after binding i got a set of 5 books in which each book was atleast 2 inches thick. So you can Imagine how huge the bundle initially was.

Slowly i graduated to other books other than Champak, tinkle and those kind of books. While i was looking for something in my fathers cupboard i found some old paperbacks. I started reading them and like them. Then my father started bringing me some paperbacks. When i was in 4th or 5th, PaiCo, which is a leading book selling shop in Kerala brought out a series of classics in illustrated format. This was my first encounter with classics. and when i started reading them i didnt know that these were classics. These included books like Gone with the wind, Tom swayer, Oliver Twist, Most classics of Shakesphere, Robinson Crusoe , Dracula etc. I enjoyed reading these books very much. There were 30 books in the series before they discontinued it. In between this i got 2 huge book. One of which contained all the stories in Arabian Nights and the other one which had all the Shakespearen classics.

Well that time i was in Mumbai and whenever i got a chance i used to buy lots of books. Once when i came back to Kochi for a holiday one of my mom's cousin introduced me to a library. That was my first time in a Library. and i used to take books from his account and that was the first time i read fiction books. This was also the time i started reading books like Hardy Boys, Enid Blyton etc.

In 10th i had the taste of Harry Potter. From then on i have read all the 6 books(till now) a number of times. I have read it so many times that i have lost count. Then after 10th i took my my membership in a library and from then on i regularly used to take books from there and read. Even now i try to read at least one book per week even when exams are on. I cannot say that i read daily books because once i start a book i cannot rest until i end the book.

My favorite book till now are da Vinci code and most of the books of Dan Brown, HP series, J.R.R Tolkien's modern day epic The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Firm by John Grisham, Timeline by Michale Crichton, The godfather by Mario Puzo, The Bourne Series by Robert Ludlum and there are many more.

My favorite author's are Dan Brown and J.K. Rowling. Nowadays i read lot of books written by of John Grisham an Robert Ludlum.

India- The Positives and Negatives

Well India is a developing country and is considered as one of the future economic powers. But for that to happen the country must produce good citizens first. We look everywhere and find people lambasting about everything they could find about this country. They just look at the negatives that are and not the positives.I could go on and on writing about the prejudice the citizens of the country throw against it but it would be better if i put a speech by our beloved President Dr Kalam here. This was a speech he gave at a function at Hyderabad.Just spare 10 minutes and read it. This was forwarded to me by a friend.

* The President of India DR. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam 's Speech in Hyderabad . *

" Why is the media here so negative?
Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our
achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success
stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?
We are the first in milk production.
We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
We are the second largest producer of wheat.
We are the second largest producer of rice.
Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a
self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements
but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters. I
was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the
day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The
Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a
Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid
and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The
gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the
newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so
NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign
things? We want foreign T. Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign
technology.

Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that
self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this
lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal
in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India . "
This was the inspirational speech given by a man whom we all idolize. To make a country great first the citizens of the country must be great. We can give commentary form out side a field about how bad the field is. thats the easy way out that most people take. But to make the field clean clean we have to enter the field to make it better. So people if you dream of living in a developed India first we have to develop ourselves. At least for the generations to come lets make our country great so that they can proudly say that they live in INDIA.
